Be Gentle: Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara to the Rescue

New friend

On and off for the past year or so, my eyes will randomly start burning later in the afternoon. In fact, while running for my (was it fourth?) caffeine trip of the day with this lady, one of my eyes started burning and tearing. And despite my trying to act normal, it is hard to do that with one eye closed and tears streaming out of it. I’ve attributed the issue to hand sanitizer, or some other irritant I must be rubbing my peepers with, but I’ve also been wondering if it’s (and yes, it pains me to say this, too) my mascara. I’ve dabbled with just about every mascara under the sun, it seems, at some point over the past decade or so, but maybe– just maybe– my eyes have become more sensitive to the chemicals in said tubes. So, with that in mind, and because C and I are both big fans of the brand’s foundations, I decided to try Neutrogena’s Healthy Volume Mascara, which is formulated for sensitive eyes. It doesn’t promise a fake-lash look, and it’s not consistently in Allure’s Best of Beauty issue (like C’s fave), but I thought it was worth a fair chance.

I promise I don’t have a wonk eye in real life.

And, as you can see above, the results were pretty good. I’ll admit it took several coats on each set of lashes to get them to this volume, but there was a notable curl, no flaking, and only a bit of smudging– though, to be fair, that was after waiting for the subway in what felt like a veritable sauna (oh how surprising, a disgusting humid day in September). My lashes were a bit sticky, but there was absolutely no irritation, and the volume was still going strong hours after applying. Overall, I’d say Neutrogena Healthy Volume is a solid choice for anyone with sensitive eyes, or, I suppose, anyone who wants a more subtle lash. So, gentle-eyed ladies, go get.
