Oh AC, how I heart thee.
So I just came back from a weekend trip to one of my favorite destinations. Yes, you guessed it, good ol’ AC, New Jersey’s gold coast, if you will, which was surprisingly packed considering it was Christmas weekend. Perhaps unsurprisingly, perhaps because it’s the Brooklyn in us, this is a town beloved by C and I, not for the gambling or crazy clubs or the tiny carts that they push you in up and down the boardwalk (though we love that, too), but for the people watching. Leading the pack ahead of fake-tanned girls and guys looking to drink/gamble/hook-up all day/night, and ahead of some other people who look like they crawled out from under a rock, is the old folk contingent-the highlight being older women who might feel that the more makeup and sparkles they put on, the younger they look. Take one such lady in her sunset years that I spotted at dinner Friday night- burgundy hair pinned back thanks to a ginormous sparkling clip, red lipstick, gold eyeshadow, and a sequin pantsuit. I loved it. I want to be this woman when I am 70. Heck, when I am 50. Actually, when is it socially acceptable to do this? Please let me know and I will get on that train. C, I’ll save a seat for you on it, too.
So, you see, Atlantic City is quite an inspiring place. But aside from the sequins and fake blonde hair and nails, there is actually one place that is a modern-day beauty oasis in the middle of the early-wrinkles-caused-by-cigarette-smoking desert: the Blue Mercury Spa at the Tropicana. Not only does this spa, which also has other locations, carry high-end lines like Laura Mercier, Nars, Tocca, Trish McEvoy, Kiehl’s, Bumble and Bumble, and Creed, some of which are notably absent from Sephora, but the spa itself offers a huge menu of treatments, including insanely indulgent warm-cream manicures and pedicures that I’ve splurged on in the past. One day I will have to try the coconut sugar scrub I’ve been eyeing for years now. Perhaps this summer. Because, let’s face it, I will be back. So next time you’re in AC, wander down to the Tropicana and stop at Blue Mercury. Maybe for a bit of pampering, maybe to pick up some hard-to-find Bobbi Brown foundation, maybe just to play with the Nars blushes. Just know, Atlantic City Dolls (even if only for the weekend), that Blue Mercury is there for you, and the staff is quite helpful and the lighting quite flattering. You’re welcome.
